Grant for Climate Adaptation Measures More Successful Than Expected

With fourteen applications in half a year, the municipal grant program for climate adaptation measures has been even more successful than anticipated. Alderman Hubert Schokker viewed one of the first results today: a green roof in the Noord-Hofland neighborhood.

Since August 2025, residents and business owners have been able to apply to the municipality for grants to fund climate-adaptive measures. Examples include installing a green roof, a gravel basin, or a rainwater ditch, or replacing pavers with semi-permeable paving. By reimbursing the full or partial cost of these measures, the municipality is helping to create a greener environment, reduce flooding, and alleviate heat stress.

Succulents that store rainwater

The subsidy is generating a lot of interest. While the municipality had expected five to ten applications per year, fourteen have already been received in just half a year. Today, for example, Alderman Schokker paid a brief visit to a resident who had a sedum roof installed—a structure with succulents that store rainwater. Thanks to such a roof, the storm sewer system is less burdened, and the house stays cooler longer in the summer.

Financial Support

“This example shows that residents are eager to do their part to make our village more resilient to extreme rainfall, heat, and drought,” says the alderman. “It’s great that we can further encourage this willingness by offering the opportunity to apply for a grant. A little financial support can sometimes make a big difference in helping residents and business owners take that final step.”
