Voting from Abroad

Are you a Dutch citizen living abroad who is no longer registered as a resident ( enrolled ) in a Dutch municipality? If so, you can register to vote in Dutch elections. Registration is handled by the municipality of The Hague.

Voter Registration Abroad

If you live abroad and want to vote in Dutch elections, you must register once as a voter outside the Netherlands. This also applies to Dutch citizens living in Aruba, Curaçao, or Sint Maarten.

Registration is done through the City of The Hague's website:
www.stemmenvanuithetbuitenland.nl

After you register, you will automatically receive the documents you need to vote in upcoming elections. Without registering, you cannot vote from abroad.

In which elections can you vote?

If you are registered to vote abroad, you can vote for:

  • the election of members of the House of Representatives
  • the election of members of the European Parliament
  • the electoral college of non-residents (for the Senate)

Requirements to be eligible to vote

You may vote if you meet the following Requirements :

  • You live outside the Netherlands and are not registered ( enrolled ) in a Dutch municipality
  • You are a Dutch citizen
  • You are 18 years of age or older

Temporary Stay Abroad

Are you temporarily abroad on Election Day, but are you still enrolled registered in a Dutch municipality? Even then, you can still vote. You can submit a request to vote by written proxy or by mail. 

You can apply for a written proxy at the municipality where you are registered enrolled. If you wish to vote by mail, you can register with the municipality of The Hague for each election. A special application form will be available prior to each election at: www.stemmenvanuithetbuitenland.nl.
