Odor Nuisance in Noord-Hofland Has Decreased
In the night from Tuesday, June 30 to Wednesday, July 1, the fire department received multiple reports of a turpentine odour in homes in the Noord-Hofland neighbourhood in Voorschoten. Residents experienced odour nuisance originating from the sewer system.
The fire department conducted various measurements, during which no hazardous substances were detected. Residents were informed about the situation by emergency services and received explanations and practical tips.
The municipality has contacted contractors currently carrying out sewer work in Voorschoten. This indicates that the cause was not related to these activities. It is suspected that someone discharged an unauthorised substance into the sewer, which caused the odour nuisance.
Cleaning of the sewer system
To reduce the odor problem, the municipality had the sewer system cleaned and flushed last night. Approximately 8,500 litre s of ditch water were used twice to remove the odor from the sewer.
On the morning of Wednesday, July 1, the municipality assessed the situation on-site at homes in Noord-Hofland. Discussions were also held with local residents. At present, it appears that the odour has completely disappeared in many homes – and has clearly decreased in others.
