Odor Nuisance in Noord-Hofland Has Decreased
During the night of Tuesday, June 30, through Wednesday, July 1, the fire department received several reports of a turpentine-like odor in homes in the Noord-Hofland neighborhood of Voorschoten. Residents reported a foul odor coming from the sewer system.
The fire department conducted several tests, which revealed no hazardous substances. Emergency responders informed residents about the situation and provided them with explanations and practical tips.
The municipality has contacted contractors who are currently carrying out sewer work in Voorschoten. It appears that this work was not the cause of the problem. It is suspected that someone discharged an unauthorized substance into the sewer system, which caused the odor problem.
Sewer Cleaning
To minimize the odor problem, the municipality had the sewer cleaned and flushed last night. Approximately 8,500 liters of ditch water was used twice to remove the odor from the sewer.
On the morning of Wednesday, July 1, the municipality assessed the situation on-site at homes in Noord-Hofland. They also spoke with local residents. At this time, it appears that the odor has completely disappeared from many homes—and has clearly diminished at others.
