Results of the Waste Separation Survey

The Municipality of Voorschoten believes it is important to take residents’ opinions into account when making decisions regarding waste collection and -processing. That is why we are pleased that approximately 1,350 residents took the time to complete the survey.

Three-quarters of residents state that they sort their waste for disposal. Two out of three also find separation easy or very easy. Fewer than one in ten residents find this difficult or very difficult.

The greatest gains can be made in simplifying the separation of plastic, metal, and beverage cartons (PMD) and fruit, vegetable, garden waste, and food scraps (GFT). Two out of ten residents find separating this waste difficult, primarily because they lack the space at home to store these types of waste separately.

Tips from residents

Residents also offer their own tips to make waste separation easier. Examples include getting extra small bins and bags at home to sort waste indoors, preventing waste by paying attention to packaging materials, and having waste sorted mechanically by a third party afterwards.

The majority of residents look for information about waste and waste separation via the municipality's website. Google and the Afvalkalender Voorschoten app are also popular ways to find information.

This year in Voorschoten, the emphasis is on better separating fruit, vegetable, and garden waste, food scraps, old paper, and cardboard. We are doing this primarily because this waste still frequently ends up in residual waste. We would like to change this, as we strive for less residual waste.
