Results of the Waste Separation Survey

The Municipality of Voorschoten believes it is important to take residents’ opinions into account when making decisions about waste collection and processing. That is why we are pleased that approximately 1,350 residents took the time to complete the survey.

Three-quarters of residents say they sort their trash. Two out of three find sorting trash easy or very easy. Fewer than one in ten residents find it difficult or very difficult.

The greatest gains can be made by simplifying the separation of plastic, metal, and beverage containers (PMD) from vegetable, fruit, garden waste, and food scraps (GFT). Two out of ten residents find separating this waste difficult, mainly because they don’t have enough space at home to store these types of waste separately.

Tips from Residents

Residents also offer their own tips to make waste separation easier. For example, they suggest getting extra bins and bags for sorting waste at home, reducing waste by paying attention to packaging materials, and having waste separated mechanically by a third party afterward.

Most residents look for information about waste and waste separation on the municipality’s website. Google and the “Afvalkalender Voorschoten” app are also popular ways to find information.

This year in Voorschoten, the focus is on improving the separation of vegetable, fruit, and yard waste, food scraps, and waste paper and cardboard. We’re doing this mainly because this waste often ends up in the general waste stream. We’d like to change this, as we’re working toward reducing general waste.
