A relatively quiet New Year's Eve in Voorschoten
New Year’s Eve in Voorschoten passed relatively quietly. Between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., the fire department received one report of an outdoor fire. Earlier in the evening, an unexploded Cobra 20 led to the cordoning off of the area around De Vliethorst sports hall. The police in our village reported two incidents related to New Year’s Eve.

The emergency services in the Hollands Midden Safety Region, of which Voorschoten is a part, had a busy New Year’s Eve. They were called into action repeatedly in several municipalities. The situation across the region was busier than the previous year, mainly due to a number of major incidents that occurred simultaneously. In addition, as in previous years, the majority of fire department calls involved extinguishing trash and dumpster fires.
Close collaboration
During New Year’s Eve, emergency services worked closely together. In the run-up to the holiday, municipalities, the police, the fire department, the ambulance service, and environmental services coordinated their efforts to prepare for various scenarios. Additional staff were deployed to the emergency dispatch center to handle the increased number of calls during New Year’s Eve.
The largest emergency response operations took place in Hillegom and twice in Leiden. There, a very large fire raged in a commercial building, a very large fire raged in a historic building in the city center, and a large fire raged in a residence, respectively. These fires occurred simultaneously, requiring an extraordinary effort from emergency services.
Thank you for your hard work
Mayor Nadine Stemerdink is pleased that New Year’s Eve in Voorschoten went relatively smoothly. “Thanks to the special enforcement officers, the police, and the fire department, whom we could count on as always. And, of course, to the field staff, who have once again put in an incredible amount of work over the past few days and even early this morning.”
