Sewage Overflow into a Ditch Near Albert Schweitzer Park
Sewage has entered the ditch near Albert Schweitzerpark. This was caused by a power outage at the pumping station on Badhuisstraat, which caused the sewer system to temporarily overflow.
Utility company Liander is working to restore power. As soon as the pumping station is back in operation, the municipality will have the contaminated ditches cleaned out.
As a precaution, it is recommended that you avoid contact with the water until the cleanup is complete. The situation is being closely monitored.
Update: April 9, 2:30 p.m.
Power has been restored to the pumping station on Badhuisstraat (at the corner of Badhuisstraat and Professor Boerhaaveweg). The power outage had been ongoing for several days. The sewer system is now functioning normally again and will no longer overflow into surface water.
To mitigate the impact on surface water, contaminated ditch water near Arnold Schweitzerplantsoen is being pumped back into the sewer system. In addition, clean water is being pumped into the ditch near the IJsbaanpad.
The Municipality of Voorschoten is in contact with the Rijnland Water Board regarding this matter. Rijnland monitors water quality and will remain involved until the surface water once again meets the desired quality standards.
