Overhanging Greenery

The municipality is asking you to remove any overhanging vegetation when maintaining your yard. This includes trees and shrubs that extend beyond your fence or the boundary of your yard and thus hang over the sidewalk or street. Overhanging vegetation can be bothersome and dangerous, especially on a narrow sidewalk. People with disabilities, in particular, can be greatly inconvenienced by this. Overhanging vegetation may come from private gardens or from flower beds owned by the municipality.

Municipal flower beds

The city prunes the plants in its flower beds between October and March. The city will prune them earlier if the sidewalk is no longer easily passable.

Private Gardens

If you see overhanging vegetation anywhere, ask the owner or tenant to trim it back. If they do not do so, you can report it to the municipality. You can do this via the website, by phone at 14 071, or through the MijnGemeenteApp. You can download the app from the App Store and the Google Play Store.

What happens after I file a report with the municipality?

A public space inspector will investigate a report. The inspector will visit the residents or the business where the overhanging vegetation was observed. If no one answers, the inspector will leave a note requesting that the overhanging vegetation be trimmed.

If the overhanging vegetation is not trimmed within four weeks, the inspector will visit again. If the owner still fails to remove the overhanging vegetation after the second request, it may be trimmed by, for example, a landscaper. If costs are incurred as a result, the owner must pay them under the legal concept of administrative enforcement.
