Development Kruispuntkerk

Last modified on: May 22, 2026

In December 2024, the Voorschoten Municipal Council ( municipal council ) decided to house the new cultural center in the Kruispuntkerk. This development will create a vibrant venue for sociocultural activities and gatherings in Voorschoten. It will give the Kruispuntkerk a sustainable new purpose, strengthen the cultural sector, and enhance the appeal of the Voorschoten “ centre .”

Initially, the municipality was going to rent the church from the owner; however, the “ executive board ” believes it is important to carry out the necessary renovations at a reasonable cost. For that reason, it proposed purchasing the complex instead of renting it.

The “ executive board ” believes that purchasing—rather than renting—is the only way to build the new cultural center at an affordable cost. Moreover, buying the church and the community center is more cost-effective than renting. In addition, the municipality will make structural investments in the complex. The value added in this way will then be retained as municipal property.

With this new approach, the residential building—which was originally intended to be located next to the church—will no longer be built.

Also the owner of the square

An additional benefit is that, with the purchase of the complex, the municipality also becomes the owner of the plaza in front of the church. If the municipality were to want to redesign the plaza in the future, it would not be dependent on another owner. Another consequence of the purchase, however, is that the construction of the new homes on the site of the current annex will not proceed.

Scheduled for completion in mid-2027

On February 12, 2026, the council approved the purchase, and the municipality is now moving forward immediately with the plan’s implementation. Cultural organizations dedicated to music, theater, dance, and film that are currently housed on Prinses Marijkelaan are expected to move into the new cultural center in mid-2027. Other organizations will also be able to use the facilities at that time.

Environmental Permit Granted for Redevelopment

On May 21, 2026, the environmental permit for the redevelopment of the Kruispuntkerk was granted. This is an important milestone in the project and the next step toward the realization of the cultural centre. The “ licence ” has been officially published. You can view the “ licence ” on the website for official announcements.

The development of the Kruispuntkerk is included in the Development Vision centre. An extensive public participation process was carried out during the drafting of the Development Vision centre . The proposed development is also mentioned in the Voorschoten Cultural Vision 2023–2026, which was created in consultation with the cultural sector. During the planning process, cultural institutions were invited to contribute their input in various ways: through discussions, surveys, and working meetings.

Cultural institutions will be closely involved in the further development of the cultural centre and in the development of the new organizational structure of the cultural centre.

On June 11, 2024, an open house was held to exchange ideas with interested parties about the plans for the Kruispuntkerk. The plans for the cultural center were presented during the Voorschoten Open Monument Day in September 2024 and 2025.

On March 4, 2026, the municipality organized an informational meeting for residents living near the Kruispuntkerk. Invitations were sent out during the week of February 23.
