Dutch Safety Board Publishes Final Report on the Voorschoten Train Accident
On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, around 3:30 a.m., a train accident occurred near Voorschoten Station. A crane on flatcars, which was crossing the tracks after scheduled maintenance work, was struck by a freight train and then by an intercity train. The Dutch Safety Board investigated the train accident. Today, it published its final report.
The Dutch Safety Board sought answers to the following questions: What allowed the crane to leave the work site and end up on a track that was in service, where it was struck first by a freight train and then by a passenger train? And: How are occupational and rail safety considerations incorporated into the planning and execution of track work while train traffic continues, and what internal and external oversight is in place for this?

The Dutch Safety Board has made a number of recommendations to improve rail safety during track work. ProRail supports these recommendations and has taken the first steps toward implementing them.
