Environmental service confirms use of steel slag in construction road Starrenburg III
Unshaped building materials, consisting largely of steel slag, have been used in a part of the temporary construction road near Starrenburg III. This is stated in the report that the environmental service shared with the municipality today. Because the steel slag is currently covered with rubble granulate, there is no risk of contact and this does not pose any direct health risks.
Residents living near the newly to be built Starrenburg III district have raised concerns about the construction of the temporary construction road and the materials used for it. In consultation with the municipality, the environmental service immediately investigated those materials more closely. The follow-up study confirms that the construction road partly consists of steel slag.

“We have to rely on inspection certificates, which do not specifically list steel slag,” says Hubert Schokker of the West-Holland Environmental Agency ( Alderman ). “I’m glad that the West-Holland Environmental Agency can now say with certainty which substances were used, although it is concerning that this was done without the required licence . I find that particularly troubling for nearby residents. At this time, there is no health risk, but the environmental agency will take swift follow-up action in its role as an enforcement agency.”
About Starrenburg III
Starrenburg III is a new residential neighborhood south of Starrenburg II, between Veurseweg and the Vliet. It will feature 356 homes in various types and price ranges. The development is being managed by De Raad Bouw and Niersman Projectontwikkeling, which have reached agreements with the municipality of Voorschoten regarding this project.
