Environmental Agency Confirms Use of Steel Slag in the Starrenburg III Road Construction Project
A section of the temporary construction road at Starrenburg III contains unprocessed construction materials, consisting largely of steel slag. This is stated in the report that the Environmental Agency shared with the municipality today. Because the steel slag is currently covered with crushed stone granulate, there is no risk of contact and it does not pose any immediate health risks.
Residents living near the planned Starrenburg III neighborhood have raised concerns about the construction of the temporary access road and the materials used in it. In consultation with the municipality, the environmental agency immediately conducted a more detailed investigation of those materials. The follow-up investigation confirms that the access road consists in part of steel slag.
A cause for concern
“We have to rely on inspection certificates, which do not specifically list steel slag,” says Alderman Hubert Schokker. “I’m glad that the West-Holland Environmental Agency can now say with certainty which substances were used, although it is concerning that this was done without the required permit. I find that particularly troubling for local residents. At this time, there is no health risk, but the environmental agency will take swift follow-up action in its role as an enforcement authority.”
About Starrenburg III
Starrenburg III is a new residential neighborhood south of Starrenburg II, between Veurseweg and the Vliet. It will feature 356 homes of various types and price ranges. The development is being carried out by De Raad Bouw and Niersman Projectontwikkeling, which have reached agreements with the municipality of Voorschoten regarding this project.
