Conversion of Historic Gas Lanterns to LED Lighting Completed

All 38 gas lanterns in downtown Voorschoten have been fitted with new fixtures featuring LED lighting. They have also been connected to the public electric lighting system and repainted in their original color.

A gas lantern on Voorstraat

There were still original gas lanterns in the center of Voorschoten. Because replacement parts were no longer available, maintenance became impossible. That is why, at the end of 2024, Visser & Smit Hanab began removing the gas connections on behalf of the municipality. SWARCO then connected the lanterns to the electric street lighting system. Now that the painting work has also been completed, the lanterns are ready for the future.

Good news for three reasons

“In total, there are 38 streetlights on Treubstraat, Voorstraat, Kerkplein, and Molenlaan,” says Alderman Hubert Schokker. “This is good news for three reasons. First, the historical and sentimental value of these streetlights has been preserved. Second, we’re saving money and reducingCO2 emissions. Third, the improved distribution of light creates a greater sense of social and traffic safety.”

Special attachments

For this project, custom work was provided by manufacturing special attachments that made it possible to install the structure on the historic lampposts.
