Conversion of Historic Gas Lanterns to LED Lighting Completed

All 38 gas lanterns in the “ centre ” in Voorschoten have been fitted with new fixtures featuring LED lighting. They have also been connected to the public electrical lighting system and repainted in their original color.

A gas lantern on Voorstraat

The “ centre ” in Voorschoten still had its original gas lanterns. Since replacement parts were no longer available, maintenance became impossible. For this reason, Visser & Smit Hanab began removing the gas connections in late 2024, commissioned by the municipality. SWARCO then connected the lanterns to the electric street lighting system. Now that the painting work has also been completed, the lanterns are ready for the future.

Good news for three reasons

“In total, there are 38 streetlights on Treubstraat, Voorstraat, Kerkplein, and Molenlaan,” says Hubert Schokker, Alderman . “That’s good news for three reasons. First, the historical and sentimental value of these streetlights has been preserved. Second, we’re saving money and reducingCO2 emissions. Third, the improved distribution of light creates a greater sense of social and traffic safety.”

Special attachments

For this project, custom work was provided by manufacturing special attachments that made it possible to install the structure on the historic lampposts.
