More than 1,200 residents share their wishes for outdoor play

What can we do to ensure that residents of Voorschoten have ample opportunities to play, participate in sports, exercise, and socialize in public spaces? To that end, the municipality is developing a new policy plan. To take residents’ wishes into account, we sent out a survey. More than 1,200 residents completed it.

The municipality is developing a new policy plan for play, sports, physical activity, and socializing in public spaces. A questionnaire was one of the ways used to involve residents in this process. Children and adults had until the end of November to fill it out.

Key Findings

These are the main findings from the survey:

  • The questionnaire was completed by 1,227 people, most of whom were adults. The largest group of children was those aged 5 to 9 (16%).
  • Nearly 60% of children up to age 9 play outside every day. For older children, that figure drops to 36%, and for teenagers, it’s 16%. Adults, on the other hand, are more likely to exercise outdoors: 31% do so daily and 43% weekly.
  • Formal playgrounds with play equipment are the most popular among children. For older children and teenagers, sports facilities and clubs become more important for staying active. For adults, the recreational areas and nature reserves in and around Voorschoten are the most popular.
  • For people with disabilities, greenery and places to sit are the most important factors. It is noteworthy that they do not always need adapted playground equipment. However, more than half (35 out of 63 responses) believe that every neighborhood should have at least one area with special equipment for people with disabilities.
  • The survey shows that there is little demand for a meeting place for young people and adults (37 responses).
