Liander and the Municipality of Voorschoten are set to upgrade the power grid

Preparing the power grid in the municipality of Voorschoten for the future. To that end, Liander account manager Mhamed el Makhloufi and Hubert Schokker, a member of the “ Alderman ,” signed their names on a large sign today. With this ceremonial act, they kicked off a neighborhood-based initiative. The formal cooperation agreement had already been signed last December.

Whether it’s electric cooking, an electric car, or other electric household appliances, residents are using more and more electricity. To ensure there’s enough electricity in the future, the low-voltage grid needs to be upgraded. In collaboration with the municipality, grid operator Liander will therefore double the number of electrical substations. In these substations—each measuring two by three metre —electricity is converted from medium voltage to low voltage, the type of electricity that comes out of the outlet at home.

Neighbourhood approach

The project is so large-scale that Liander and the municipality of Voorschoten have opted for a neighborhood-based approach. This means that Liander will carry out the work for an entire neighborhood in one go and in a tailored manner, as much as possible. After all, every neighborhood is different. Consider the geographical layout, such as the historic “ centre ” and pre-war and post-war residential neighborhoods. Or think of details like the most appropriate color for the electrical cabinets.

Energy transition

Alderman Hubert Schokker is happy to sign the document. “I’m very happy that we’ll be working even more closely with Liander to make the power grid in Voorschoten future-proof again. That’s important for residents who run their washing machines, brew coffee, and turn on the lights in the evening. But it’s also important that we work together to take every step that contributes to the energy transition. And this is a huge step!”

Vlietwijk

The first neighbourhood where Liander is renewing the electricity grid is Vlietwijk. Two additional substations will be installed here, and some of the old electricity cables to and from these spaces will be renewed. Local residents already received a letter about this last month. The plan for these works is therefore already finalised and falls outside the cooperation agreement. The work in Vlietwijk will last from April 2025 until early 2026.
