Students Open a Crosswalk at Gevers Deynoot Elementary School

Children from the student council at Gevers Deynoot Elementary School opened a new crosswalk today. It was installed near the parking lot on Burgemeester van der Haarplein. Councilman Hubert Schokker and school principal Arnaud Ouwehand helped unveil the traffic signs.

Students unveil the traffic sign

The students at Gevers Deynoot Elementary School have been actively working to ensure a safe crossing near their school. Last year, they wrote a letter to the alderman, asking for more traffic safety measures. Following an extensive joint investigation by the municipality and the student council, their request has now been successfully implemented.

A Little Poem by Dick Bruna

In addition to unveiling new traffic signs, the municipality painted markings on the road. Pavers featuring an educational poem by the famous author Dick Bruna were also installed. These help children cross the street safely.

Councilman Hubert Schokker: “It’s wonderful to see how young children are actively working to improve safety in their neighborhood. The city is pleased to support this initiative. We’re happy to work with schools to make our streets safer.”
