New Year's Eve without consumer fireworks, featuring a central fireworks show
For the 2026–2027 New Year’s Eve celebration, the municipality of Voorschoten is organizing a central, professionally staged fireworks show. No exemptions will be granted to associations or foundations for setting off consumer fireworks.
The Safe New Year’s Eve Act took effect on August 1, 2026. This law establishes a nationwide ban on Category F2 consumer fireworks. The aim is to make New Year’s Eve safer, calmer, and more manageable for residents, emergency services, and other stakeholders.
Not enough time and capacity
Although the law allows for exemptions to be granted, Mayor Nadine Stemerdink decided not to make use of that option. “The law has only very recently gone into effect,” the mayor explains. “There is insufficient time and capacity to review applications and en supervision ly ensure compliance with the Requirements. Despite the fireworks ban, we expect a busy and turbulent night. The police’s efforts will then be primarily focused on ensuring the safety of residents and first responders and maintaining public order.”
Main Fireworks Show
Professionally organized fireworks shows will still be allowed. To welcome the New Year in a festive, safe, and community-building way, the municipality of Voorschoten is organizing a central fireworks show. It will take place on the grounds of the Voorschoten '97 soccer club. Preparations have already begun. In October, the municipality will provide residents with further information about the fireworks show.
