Comprehensive audits in Voorschoten uncover irregularities
Flavored vapes, nicotine pouches, illegal cigarettes, and suspicious housing conditions for migrant workers. These are the findings of several comprehensive inspections conducted by the municipality of Voorschoten in recent weeks. The municipality carried out these inspections in collaboration with security partners such as Customs, the police, and the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).
Comprehensive inspections are inspections that verify compliance with all applicable laws and regulations at the same time. These include rules for building and fire safety, environmental regulations, and compliance with the zoning plan. They also cover the storage of hazardous substances, raw materials for synthetic drugs, or explosive substances in illegal fireworks. These inspections are conducted by the municipality’s administrative intervention team, in collaboration with safety partners. They are usually unannounced.
Safety and a Fair Business Environment
Mayor Nadine Stemerdink: “We are doing our best to remove criminals, illegal products, and unsafe substances that pose a risk to our residents from Voorschoten. Through these inspections, we are helping to improve safety and foster a fair business climate. It is no coincidence that inspections are part of our approach to combating subversion. Every inspection in recent weeks has uncovered violations, ranging from minor to very serious. That’s reason enough to continue these efforts.”
Fines and Further Investigation
During inspections over the past few weeks, the NVWA identified violations of the ban on flavored vapes. Fines are being imposed for these violations. The NVWA also seized fifteen boxes of nicotine pouches. Furthermore, customs officials discovered 820 illegal cigarettes. During a zoning inspection, twenty migrant workers were found in a residence. An investigation is underway to determine whether they are being housed properly and employed under appropriate conditions.
