Comprehensive Inspection of Storage Units and Business Premises
Last week, the Municipality of Voorschoten and the police conducted a comprehensive inspection of storage units and commercial spaces. This was done primarily because fireworks and other hazardous substances are often stored in these types of spaces. At one location, the police found a person residing in the Netherlands illegally. Otherwise, nothing was found during the inspection.
Comprehensive inspections are conducted by the municipality’s administrative intervention team. Through these inspections, the municipality aims to prevent illegal fireworks from entering circulation and to ensure that hazardous substances are not stored in residential areas. In addition, they are intended to verify compliance with building and fire safety regulations, environmental regulations, and the zoning plan, among other things. The police were present to provide support. Two dogs trained to detect explosive substances and hazardous chemicals were also on site.
Business owners follow the rules
The inspection revealed that the business owners in question are complying fully with the rules. Furthermore, it was found that the landlord of the storage units has his contracts in excellent order and is also committed to safety. However, the police did encounter one person at one location who was residing in the Netherlands illegally. That person was handed over to the Immigration, Identification, and Human Trafficking Division. This division is conducting a further investigation.

“The fact that we found someone who had been sleeping for a long time in a dark storage unit on a bare mattress under a fleece blanket is very concerning,” says Mayor Nadine Stemerdink. “But the fact that we didn’t find anything else is good news. Because even though we conduct these inspections thoroughly, we’d prefer not to uncover any violations at all. Especially when it comes to fireworks storage, because the risks of an accident are incalculable.”
