Information Session in Leiden on Projects at Vijf Meilaan 137

In Leiden, across from the Korte Vliet near Het Fortuyn van Voorschoten, the City of Leiden is constructing two new school buildings. An informational meeting will be held on May 22. The meeting will cover both these projects and the development of the adjacent Korte Vlietpark. Residents of Voorschoten are also welcome to attend.
The information session will take place on Thursday, May 22. You are welcome to arrive starting at 6:45 p.m. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. The session will be held at Vijf Meilaan 137 in Leiden (south entrance). No registration is required.
Two new school buildings
Between Korte Vliet and Johan Wagenaarlaan in Leiden stood outdated school buildings, such as the red-blue-yellow low-rise building of the former ROC Mondriaan. This site is being revitalized. Some of the school buildings have been demolished. The tall school building that remains will undergo extensive renovation to house the International Transition Class (ISK) of the Leonardo da Vinci School Group. A new Vlietland College is being built on the vacated construction site. A new location is still being sought for the Stichting Fatih community center on Johan Wagenaarlaan.
Demolition Work
The demolition work did not go exactly as the City of Leiden had planned. To avoid traffic disruptions, 80% of the demolition debris was to be hauled away by water. This was partially successful. However, because the quay turned out to be too weak and a main distribution pipeline belonging to the water utility runs along it, some of the debris still had to be hauled away by road.
Environmental Permit
The environmental permit for the new Vlietland College building has been granted. The Johan Wagenaarlaan Residents’ Association has filed an objection to this decision. Once that matter is resolved, a supplementary permit application will be submitted to allow the school’s sports hall to be used outside of school hours as well.
Planning
Vlietland College is scheduled to begin construction work before the start of summer break. The ISK will move to its temporary location at Noachstraat 2 during the week of July 21–25. Demolition of the entrance will begin in the fourth quarter of 2025. The contractor will then construct new facades and complete the interior. The Fatih Foundation has already moved to Noachstraat 2.
