In memoriam René Zoetemelk
The Municipality of Voorschoten was saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Reinier Johannes Maria – René – Zoetemelk. René passed away on Tuesday, June 16th, at the age of 65.
From 2006 to 2023, René Zoetemelk was politically active as a " Alderman," city council member, and member of a citizens’ committee. We had the privilege of seeing him serve as the lead candidate and caucus chair of the “ CDA ” (For a Better Municipality) party, as well as a member of the presidium, the confidence committee, and the employers’ committee; and as a “ Alderman ” (municipal commissioner) with portfolios including sustainability, sports & well-being, and traffic & transportation. During that time, he made a significant contribution to our municipality.
René was known as a true unifier with a big heart for Voorschoten. He dedicated himself to a wide range of policy areas for our municipality. On September 29, 2022, he received a Royal Honour for his commitment as a public representative.
We are grateful to René for everything he has meant to Voorschoten. We remember him with respect, appreciation, and warmth. Our thoughts go out to his partner Wilma, his daughter Dewi, and everyone who loved him. We wish them strength in coping with this great loss.
