Horstlaan Will Become a Bicycle-Friendly Street
A bike-friendly street where cars are guests. That is the new role of Horstlaan. This measure further strengthens the LF4 Midden-Nederlandroute, the long-distance bike route between The Hague and Enschede. Alderman Hubert Schokker took the first ride today together with the Fietsersbond.
To ensure that cyclists can once again use Horstlaan comfortably, the asphalt was repaved last week. The speed limit on Horstlaan was also reduced to 30 km/h, a speed more appropriate for the narrow road. Horst and Voordelaan will not become bike-friendly streets, but the speed limit there has also been reduced to 30 km/h. As a result, both commuters and recreational cyclists can now count on a safer route.
Healthy Mobility
“The creation of this new bike street is a milestone we can be proud of,” says Alderman Hubert Schokker. “By giving cyclists more space—both literally and figuratively—we’re investing in traffic safety, healthy mobility, and a more attractive living environment for all residents. The fact that this bike street is part of the LF4 adds extra value to the project. We’re not only contributing to the regional bike network, but also strengthening the connection with other cities and regions.”
Visible changes
From now on, drivers on Horstlaan will see a strip of red asphalt, flanked on both sides by a narrow black strip and edge markings. The visual narrowing of the road encourages drivers to slow down naturally. In addition, the shoulder has been raised, the exit to Duivenvoorde Castle has been renovated, and new signs and road markings have been installed.
