Hollandse Duinen Deserves Official National Park Status
Hollandse Duinen, an area that includes the municipality of Voorschoten, has been designated a national park as of last Tuesday. Minister Jaimi van Essen of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security, and Nature granted the area this official status.
Hollandse Duinen is the first national park located entirely within South Holland. The wide coastal strip stretching from Hoek van Holland to Hillegom deserves this status due to its enormous biodiversity. For example, more than 7,000 different species of plants and animals can be found in the dune and beach ridge landscape.
Great recognition and motivation
“This official status is a tremendous recognition and source of motivation for the more than sixty partners in the collaboration area. This is truly an achievement. There have been lengthy discussions about this, but we’re proud that we’ve finally succeeded,” says Alderman Hubert Schokker. “In Voorschoten, we’re particularly committed to Duin, Horst & Weide, a sub-area of Hollandse Duinen. This includes restoring historic sightlines, transforming grasslands into nature-friendly meadows, and improving recreational connections. We’re also working toward creating an information center.”
