Relocation of the bridge at Hofweg
Last modified on: May 22, 2026
General Information
In the summer of 2025, the bridge on Hofweg near the Allemansgeest restaurant was removed. This decision was made due to the bridge’s poor structural condition and the associated safety risks. After the bridge was removed, it became apparent that a key link in the local and regional walking and biking network had been temporarily severed. The “ executive board ” (Dutch National Route Network) examined how this connection could be restored in a sustainable and manageable way. The plan must align well with existing regional agreements, which were established in collaboration with the Province of South Holland, the Holland Rijnland Region, and the municipality of Leiden. It must also take into account the ongoing area development along Hofweg.
Relocation of the bridge at Hofweg
The Waterways and Navigation Authority ( executive board ) has decided to relocate the bridge on Hofweg. This will be a fixed bridge with a clearance height of 300 cm. In making this decision, the “ executive board ” opted for a solution that is manageable in terms of costs and risks, and that aligns with the manner in which the bridge was originally transferred by the province of South Holland and has functioned over the past years. Priority was given to restoring accessibility, traffic safety, and recreational opportunities.
The " executive board " is beginning further preparations and the implementation of the work, which is tentatively scheduled for the end of 2026. Residents will be informed in a timely manner about the progress of this project.
