Eighth-grade classes from elementary schools in Voorschoten played the municipal council game "Democracity"
All elementary schools in Voorschoten participated in Democracity over the past two weeks. This children’s city council game took place in the council chamber of City Hall. During the game, elementary school students learned what it’s like to be a member of the city council and to make decisions.
During Democracity, the students built the “empty” village of Voorschoten and chose amenities such as a hospital, a police station, or a solar farm. They experienced what it’s like to form political parties and determine their positions. During a simulated city council meeting, they voted on each other’s proposals.
The municipality believes it is important to introduce elementary school students to how democracy works. Mayor Stemerdink: “With Democracity, kids learn how local politics works. More than 300 eighth-graders are learning in a fun way how to make choices, form opinions, and understand that not all wishes can come true. Who knows—they might be the council members of the future!”
