Voorschoten City Council Adopts Climate Adaptation Policy

At its meeting on May 25, the Voorschoten City Council adopted the climate adaptation policy. The policy outlines how the municipality will work to ensure a green, livable, and climate-resilient environment in the coming years.

Voorschoten is preparing for the future and changing weather conditions. One challenge is to design the living environment to be robust and resilient. With the climate adaptation policy, there is now agreement on the frameworks within which the village can be developed in the coming years. This includes ensuring sufficient green space for cooling, reducing flooding during rainstorms, and constructing and renovating homes and other buildings in a climate-adaptive manner.

Earlier this year, the policy was open for public comment for six weeks. “We received good suggestions, as well as calls for more action and concrete measures,” says Alderman Hubert Schokker. “Of course, that’s what we want as well. I’m therefore proud that, just like Leiden and Zoeterwoude, for example, we’re not just saying that we consider climate change an important issue, but have also developed a policy to address it. Now that we’ve agreed on the framework, we’re taking the next step, focused on implementation. This means we’ll be holding constructive discussions, with opportunities for residents, business owners, and housing associations to participate. Together, we’ll work to keep our village green, livable, and climate-resilient—for future residents as well.”
