City Wants to Buy Kruispuntkerk Instead of Renting It
In December 2024, the Voorschoten City Council decided to house the new cultural center in the Kruispuntkerk. The city administration believes it is important to carry out the necessary renovations at a reasonable cost. For this reason, it proposes purchasing the complex rather than renting it.
The city council believes that purchasing—rather than renting—is the only way to build the new cultural center at an acceptable cost. “Buying the church and the community center is also more cost-effective than renting,” says Alderman Hubert Schokker. “In addition, we will be making structural investments in the complex. The value we add in this way will then be preserved as our own property.”
Also the owner of the square
An additional benefit is that, with the purchase of the complex, the municipality also becomes the owner of the plaza in front of the church. If the municipality were to want to redesign the plaza in the future, it would not be dependent on another owner. Another consequence of the purchase, however, is that the construction of the new homes on the site of the current annex will not proceed.
Completion in July 2027
If the council approves the plan on February 12, the municipality will immediately begin implementing it. Cultural organizations dedicated to music, theater, dance, and film that are currently housed on Prinses Marijkelaan are expected to move into the new cultural center starting in July 2027. Other organizations will also be able to use the facilities at that time.
