The Municipality of Voorschoten Extends the Term of the Emergency Shelter
At the request of the COA, the municipality of Voorschoten is extending the term of the emergency shelter location at hotel Van der Valk De Gouden Leeuw until December 1, 2023.
The COA states that the pressure on refugee reception remains unprecedentedly high, and that securing sufficient reception capacity is extremely complex. The closure of temporary shelter sites, combined with an increased influx and delayed outflow of refugees, poses major challenges for the COA. The COA has indicated that the emergency shelter at the Van der Valk hotel in Voorschoten is a crucial link in the reception process. For these reasons, the COA has requested that the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations ( executive board ) extend the emergency shelter in Voorschoten under the same conditions. Following a positive meeting with local residents, the municipality has decided to extend the term of the emergency shelter until December 1, 2023. The target group for the expansion is the same group already staying at the hotel. These are status holders awaiting permanent housing in another municipality and/or family members arriving for family reunification. This is a group of people with prospects for the future in the Netherlands.
Severe shortage of shelter spaces
There is currently a nationwide severe shortage of reception places at asylum seekers' centres (AZCs). Many places in the COA's asylum seekers' centres are currently still being 'occupied' by status holders waiting for permanent housing. By organising temporary emergency shelter, the municipality of Voorschoten contributes to relieving the burden on the AZCs and accelerating the integration of status holders into Dutch society.
