The Municipality of Voorschoten Designates Fireworks-Free Zones
Last Tuesday, the Voorschoten Municipal Executive ( executive board ) made a decision regarding fireworks-free zones for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations. Residents are prohibited from setting off consumer fireworks at nine locations.
From 6:00 p.m. on December 31 through 2:00 a.m. on January 1, residents celebrating New Year’s Eve are permitted to set off consumer fireworks. This is stipulated in the national Fireworks Decree. However, to prevent danger, damage, or nuisance, municipalities may grant exceptions. In so-called fireworks-free zones, residents are not allowed to set off fireworks.
“Together, we’ll undoubtedly make this a festive New Year’s celebration,” explains Mayor Nadine Stemerdink. “But let’s also do so safely. Vulnerable residents in nursing and care homes, animals at a petting zoo, and historic buildings with thatched roofs deserve extra protection. That is why, in consultation with the relevant site managers, we have designated nine fireworks-free zones. I trust that we will all abide by these rules.”
The following fireworks-free zones have been designated for the upcoming New Year's Eve celebrations:
- Mayor Berkhout Park
- Town hall at Leidseweg 25, including the area around the Kruispuntkerk
- Van der Valk Hotel at 180 Veurseweg
- Adegeest Residential Care Center at 21 Bachlaan
- Vlietwijk Nursing and Care Home at 2 Professor Einsteinlaan
- Construction site for the Foreschate nursing and care home at Rouboslaan 1
- Oud Bijdorp Nursing and Care Home at Veurseweg 3
- Voorschoten Petting Zoo on the Rosenburgh Estate
- Knipmolen at Vliet and Wegen 3
The police will be actively enforcing the rules, particularly in Burgemeester Berkhoutpark and around the “ town hall ” and the residential care centers. More information about New Year’s Eve will be available on the Voorschoten municipal website starting December 22.
