The Municipality of Voorschoten is installing rotating speed limit signs

The municipality of Voorschoten has purchased four digital speed signs with a grant from the province of South Holland. These Speed Information Displays (SIDs) are set up at regular intervals at various locations throughout the village to alert road users to their speed. Green means they’re going the right speed; red means they’re speeding.

According to René Zoetemelk, the alderman for traffic, many residents are annoyed by drivers who speed down their streets.“The municipality wants to address this behavior. Now that the school year has started again, we’ve put up the signs for the first time near a number of schools in Voorschoten. This allows us to draw drivers’ attention to their speed in a positive way: road users don’t receive a ticket from SIDs. If you’re not speeding, a green smiley face or a thumbs-up appears on the sign. If you’re speeding, the speed appears in red along with a sad smiley face. This allows drivers to adjust their driving behavior when necessary.”

The SIDs remain posted at each location for about 3 weeks and are then rotated throughout the village.
