City Provides Trash Pickers to Combat Litter

Come to Treubplein on Saturday, March 5!

On Saturday, March 5, Councilwoman Erika Spil (Sustainability, Waste, and Environment) will be at Treubplein from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a specially set-up booth to raise awareness about litter. Every resident of Voorschoten can pick up a litter picker and trash bags there, so that together we can work toward a cleaner Voorschoten.

Unfortunately, there is still too much litter on the streets. Litter has negative consequences for people, animals, and plants. Councilmember Spil: “If every resident of Voorschoten were to start by picking up just one piece of litter every day, our town would look a lot cleaner in a year.” Have you gotten the hang of it and want to do more? The municipality provides free litter pickers and trash bags to anyone who wants to take a litter-picking walk in their neighborhood.”

Giveaway

Bernadette, the “Cigarette Butt Girl,” will also be there on Saturday and will talk more about litter and its impact at the booth. The initiative includes a giveaway where you can win a fun and sustainable gift. Anyone who wants to help make the neighborhood cleaner and has a chance to win the prize is welcome to join us at Treubplein on Saturday, March 5!

Lilly Platt

On Friday, March 11, Councilwoman Erika Spil will join 13-year-old Lilly Platt—an ambassador for How Global and the Plastic Pollution Coalition—on a walk through Voorschoten to pick up litter. Lilly has been picking up litter in the Voorschoten area since 2017. She was inspired by her grandfather, who told her about the “plastic soup” and the fact that plastic doesn’t decompose.
