Municipality Presents Balanced Budget for 2026–2029
The Municipal Executive of Voorschoten is presenting the final budget of its term in office. Unlike in previous versions, the Municipal Executive is not proposing any major shifts or administrative decisions for the 2026–2029 budget. In recent years, the City Council has already approved proposals that have ensured a sufficiently sound financial foundation.
“The municipal budget is in order,” reports Alderman Hans van der Elst. “This is partly thanks to increased contributions from the national government. This has helped mitigate the ‘fiscal cliff’ of 2026 to some extent. However, starting in 2028, deficits in national government contributions will loom large once again. This applies to all municipalities.”
Rise in Housing Costs Slowed
Voorschoten is also what’s known as a “disadvantaged municipality.” The alderman explains: “Due to the redistribution of the Municipal Fund, we’re also receiving less money from that source. But that’s no reason to give up. Although our town has relatively high municipal housing costs, we’re managing to slow the rate of increase compared to other municipalities. Thanks to the professional and respectful administrative culture in our collaboration with the city council, we’ll be able to keep Voorschoten’s finances on the right track in the coming years as well.”
Housing, housing, housing
To make room for the new municipal executive that will take office after the municipal elections on March 18, 2026, the budget’s ambitions have been deliberately kept modest, and the executive is focusing primarily on implementing existing policies. Under the motto “housing, housing, housing,” the municipal executive is, for example, championing projects on Jan Evertsenlaan, Jan Wagtendonkstraat, Huize Bijdorp (136 homes), Raadhuislaan (44 homes), and Segaar-Arsenaal (100 homes). By 2026, Starrenburg III (356 homes) will also be ready for construction.
Traffic Safety, Business Parks, and Sports Arena
As part of efforts to create livable neighborhoods, major maintenance work in Adegeest will continue. The municipal executive also aims to improve traffic safety around schools, intersections, and roundabouts. In addition, the implementation plan for the development of the business parks in Voorschoten will be finalized, and the municipal executive plans to present the final design for a new sports hall near the Het Wedde swimming pool in 2026.
Social Sector, Events, and Culture
In the social sector, too, the focus is on the future. This includes fundamental reforms of youth care at the regional level, effective implementation of the Wmo, and the construction of two “skewed houses.” Furthermore, the municipal executive is investing in sports and prevention, improvements to sports facilities, a new comprehensive safety policy, and a new events policy. Finally, the municipal executive is moving forward with the Culture 2026 implementation agenda.
