No illegal fireworks found during garage inspections
Yesterday, inspectors from the municipality of Voorschoten, together with the police, inspected approximately thirty garage units for the possible storage of fireworks or other hazardous substances. Two dogs trained to sniff out and detect explosives were also deployed during the inspection. Nothing out of the ordinary was found.
Garage units in residential neighborhoods and industrial parks are often used to store fireworks or other hazardous materials. This poses significant safety risks to nearby residents—not only because of the explosive power or flammability of these materials, but also because of the often unsafe storage conditions. To identify dangerous situations and prevent illegal storage, the municipality conducts unannounced inspections.
That was quite a scare
“Fortunately, no irregularities were found,” says Mayor Nadine Stemerdink. “We’ve all seen the images on television that show just how important it is for us to conduct these kinds of inspections. After all, together we are responsible for the safety of all our residents. I’d also like to thank the owners of the garage units, for whom it can be quite a shock when an inspection like this is carried out. I’m pleased with this outcome and look forward to a peaceful and enjoyable New Year’s Eve, during which everyone will respect our fireworks-free zones.”
