Grand Opening of Leidseweg Noord

Leidseweg Noord reopened to traffic on Wednesday, May 25, following extensive maintenance. Alderwoman Erika Spil (Public Space and Green Areas Management) performed the opening ceremony together with Danielle Bijleveld (management of the contracting firm J. Bijleveld BV).

“I’m incredibly proud of the result and of everyone who contributed their ideas to this project,” said Councilor Spil. “Through an intensive participatory process involving local residents and business owners, we’ve come up with a great design, and the road will serve us well for many years to come.”

Facade-to-facade

Over the past few months, a great deal of work has been done to bring Leidseweg Noord—both above and below ground—fully up to date. New sidewalks and a new roadway have been constructed, and the green spaces have also been renovated. Leidseweg has been renovated from one end to the other. As part of an intensive public participation process with local residents, more green spaces have been added, among other improvements. The underground infrastructure has also been upgraded, and a separate sewer system is now in place. This means that wastewater and stormwater are kept separate, primarily to address flooding issues. In addition, a drainage system has been installed beneath the sidewalks to address the same problem.

Outstanding Issues

The road has been redesignated as a 30 km/h zone to improve safety and quality of life. This zone extends from the intersection with Piet Heynlaan to the Berbice residence. The major construction work is now virtually complete, though there are still several remaining tasks that need to be addressed. These will cause minimal disruption. This work will take a little more time to complete.
