Erik van Wattingen Named New Municipal Secretary of Voorschoten

Mayor Nadine Stemerdink: “As the municipal executive, we are pleased that Erik van Wattingen is willing, following an interim period, to take on a permanent position as municipal secretary/general director for the municipality of Voorschoten. Ambitious organization

“I’ve been working in the municipality of Voorschoten for two years now, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it,” says Erik van Wattingen. “And I’m very proud and grateful that the municipal executive has placed its trust in me to continue my work here. Together with the new management team, I look forward to continuing to work on the development of the organization, which is home to many skilled and loyal colleagues. Together, we face significant societal challenges. But I’ve noticed that, both in the town and within the organization, we’re rolling up our sleeves and are open to change and innovation. Knowledgeable and dedicated

Over the past two years, Van Wattingen laid the foundation for more proactive and customer-focused municipal services. The municipal executive is pleased with the expert and dedicated manner in which he did so. With his characteristic entrepreneurial approach, he fostered greater connection between the administration, the community, and the organization. Furthermore, he has proven to be an excellent chief advisor to the municipal executive. The municipal executive looks forward to continuing its collaboration with Erik van Wattingen and wishes him much joy and success as he continues his work for our municipality.

Procedure

On August 1, 2023, Erik van Wattingen was appointed to a six-month term. That term was extended several times. In early 2025, the municipal council initiated the process for a permanent appointment as municipal secretary, a position that is combined with that of general director. On January 1, 2026, Erik van Wattingen will join the municipality of Voorschoten on a permanent basis.

Experience

Erik van Wattingen has extensive experience in local government. Before his appointment with the municipality of Voorschoten, he served, among other roles, as municipal secretary of Koggenland in North Holland. Prior to that, he worked for many years in the business world.
