Heritage Education for Children
There are several heritage projects in our municipality that have been specifically designed for children ages 4 to 12. Through learning and hands-on activities, they can discover more about the history of our municipality and understand why their surroundings look the way they do. Below are a number of projects that the municipality has (co-)developed and wholeheartedly recommends to you.
The Canon of Voorschoten
The Canon of Voorschoten tells the story of Voorschoten’s history, from prehistory to the present. Many authors and advisors have contributed to telling that story in a clear and engaging way. Accessibility, readability, and clarity of the text were the top priorities. The intention was not to cover the entire history, nor to produce an academic publication with numerous footnotes. All authors have strived to tell a clear, understandable, and readable story without too many details and with engaging illustrations. It is up to the website’s users to judge whether they have succeeded in doing so.
Archaeology Comes to Life
Archaeology workbook for grades 7 and 8.
Get to know Kars, a man who was murdered nearly 4,000 years ago in the dunes of Wassenaar, and Trude, who lived in a castle in Voorschoten. How did people live thousands of years ago? Where did the Romans live, and what did their fort look like?
“Archeology Comes to Life” is a booklet about archeology designed for 7th and 8th graders. It’s both educational and fun—even for adults—and tells a lot about the earliest history of Voorschoten, Leidschendam-Voorburg, and Wassenaar.

This booklet was commissioned by the Pact of Duivenvoorde, a partnership between the municipalities of Voorschoten, Leidschendam-Voorburg, and Wassenaar, and was part of an archaeology exhibition in 2009.

A Journey Through the History of Country Estates
Quiz for children in grades 6 through 8.
A quiz has been created with fun facts about country estates. Questions like, “Do you know what a country estate is? And what people used to do there?” are answered in a playful way. This way, you’ll learn more about the many country estates in our municipality.

The quiz was created by volunteers from the Foundation for the Preservation of Cultural-Historical Country Estates and was made possible in part by the municipality of Voorschoten, the Pact of Duivenvoorde, and the province of South Holland.

FARM HERITAGE
Teaching package for elementary schools (grades 1 through 8).
Want to learn all about farmers and the landscape of Voorschoten, Leidschendam, Voorburg, and Wassenaar at your own level? You can with this teaching package! The package includes a folder with 12 lessons for all grade levels, a DVD with five videos that complement the lessons, a book, and various supplementary materials, including several games.

The teaching package has been made available to schools, but can also be borrowed by community organizations through the libraries in Voorschoten and Wassenaar.
Take a dip in the dunes
Teaching package for students in grades 5 and 6.
Join us on a journey of discovery through the dune area between Scheveningen and Katwijk. In this area, you’ll find many traces of people from the past. Get answers to questions such as: What are dunes? How are they formed? And what do people use the dunes for? The lessons include hands-on activities on various themes, such as animals, water, war, agriculture, and recreation. An outdoor lesson can also be organized, taught by instructors from Dunea and Staatsbosbeheer.
