Third Phase of the RijnlandRoute Begins
More lanes, a taller bridge, and new green spaces. These improvements will soon make traffic flow more smoothly and be more enjoyable than ever along the N206 Europaweg and Lammenschansplein. The third and final phase of the RijnlandRoute began a few weeks ago.

Among residents of Voorschoten, Lammenschansplein in Leiden is known for its traffic jams. Since the grand opening of the N434 (including the Corbulo Tunnel), that risk has already decreased. However, due in part to the construction of thousands of new homes in the region, traffic will become heavier again in the coming years. So if we want Leiden and Voorschoten to remain easily accessible, additional measures are needed. That is why work is being done on Europaweg and Lammenschansplein.
What will change?
The Europaweg will have two lanes in each direction. Lammenschansplein will also gain additional lanes. To further improve traffic flow, the turnoff to the Corbuloflat (near the Hypotheker and Kringloopmania) will be eliminated, as will the connection to the sand transfer station. The Lammebrug will be widened and raised by 2.5 meters, so that it will need to be opened less frequently for ships in the future. The Trekvlietbrug will also be widened and replaced with a fixed bridge. Finally, new sidewalks and bicycle tunnels will be built, along with a bus lane along Europaweg and improved green spaces.
A Three-Phase Approach
The contractor Boskalis will carry out the work in three phases. Phase 1 will begin in January 2025. A temporary road and temporary bridges will then be built alongside the current road and bridges. Phase 2 will begin in October 2025. At that time, traffic will use the temporary route, the current road will be demolished, and a new road will be built. In Phase 3, starting in June 2027, traffic will use the new road, and the temporary road and bridges will be removed. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
About the RijnlandRoute
The construction work is part of the RijnlandRoute, the new connection between Katwijk—via the A44—and the A4 near Leiden. The RijnlandRoute consists of three subprojects. The new N206 Tjalmaweg opened last year. The N434, including the Corbulo Tunnel, opened this summer. The N206 Europaweg is the third and final subproject.
