Thanks to the “Doortrappen” program, keep cycling with confidence and enjoyment

This fall, the municipalities of Leiden, Leiderdorp, Oegstgeest, Zoeterwoude, and Voorschoten are organizing the “Doortrappen” program. This program consists of seven activities designed to help seniors continue to enjoy cycling. The municipalities are carrying out this initiative in collaboration with local and community partners, including the Holland Rijnland region, senior citizens’ associations, the Fietsersbond, and the Fietsmaatjes association.

Joost de Groot is the road safety project manager for the Holland Rijnland region: “We Dutch are practically born with bicycle pedals on our feet. Many people enjoy cycling and want to keep doing it. As you get older, it sometimes becomes a little less natural. Through the activities of Doortrappen, we want to help all seniors continue to cycle with confidence and enjoyment.”

Cycling Days

Seniors from all municipalities are welcome to attend one of the Doortrap Days. At a Doortrap Day, visitors can learn in a relaxed atmosphere about topics such as great bike routes, handy bike accessories, safe e-bike riding, and cycling activities for seniors. You can also test your cycling skills on the bike course, get tips from fitness specialists, and win cycling gear in the raffle. Councilmember Hubert Schokker: “Staying active and getting out and about is very important, no matter your age. These Doortrap Days offer our residents help with safe cycling in a very pleasant and accessible way. I would definitely recommend everyone to stop by!”

Two Doortrap Days will be held: on September 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Huis van de Buurt Stevenshof in Leiden, and on October 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the “De Derde Helft” clubhouse of the RLC soccer club in Leiderdorp.

Keep Pedaling - Bike Service Desks

The "Doortrappen" Bike Service will be visiting all municipalities right after the fall break. At the Bike Service, seniors can have their bikes inspected for free by a professional bike mechanic, who will help adjust the bike for maximum comfort. Seniors can also visit the service for personalized advice, bike routes, and tips. Dates, times, and locations for the Bike Services will be announced shortly.
