Executive board submits a proposal for a new sports center to municipal council
In the future, too, residents of Voorschoten should be able to swim, play sports, and socialize close to home. That is why a new sports center is being built. The “ executive board ” selected a design featuring two pools and recreational facilities. On September 24, the “ municipal council ” will decide whether that design may indeed be implemented.
The Het Wedde Swimming Pool and the De Vliethorst Sports Hall are outdated and in need of replacement. That is why the “ executive board ” is proposing to the “ municipal council ” that it allocate €28.3 million for a new sports center. There, children will soon be able to take swimming lessons, seniors can exercise in a warm pool, sports clubs can practice, students can take physical education classes, and residents can meet one another. With the new sports center, Voorschoten is investing in health, vitality, and water safety for current and future generations for the next 50 years.
Alignment with residents' wishes
“We involved residents, sports clubs, schools, and other users in the planning process,” says Rachèl van Hellemondt, Alderman . “More than 720 residents filled out a survey about the new swimming pool. Their input helped us further refine the proposal. At the same time, we’re also looking at the future need for swimming facilities and sports amenities in the region. That’s why we’re opting for a sports center that not only meets today’s needs but is also ready for the future.”
Sustainable and future-proof
The new sports center will be built with sustainability in mind. The building will be all-electric, nearly energy-neutral, and constructed using circular principles as much as possible. The Het Wedde swimming pool will remain open during construction, allowing residents to continue using the current facility until the new sports center is completed.
Planning
The City Council ( municipal council ) will make a decision on Thursday, September 24, 2026. If it approves the proposal, the municipality will begin further developing the design and the bidding process. Construction of the new sports center is scheduled for 2029 and 2030. Afterward, the current swimming pool will be demolished and the surrounding area will be redeveloped.
