The City Center as the driving force behind a vibrant and dynamic Voorschoten

COVID-19 still has us in its grip. But with a healthy and fresh outlook on the future, the municipality is working together with its business owners, investors, and residents to create a future-proof downtown that will serve as the driving force behind a vibrant and thriving Voorschoten. This week, the city council adopted the thought-provoking and inspiring vision document “Stadsdorp in Beweging.” The document is a call to work together to make the town center a place that belongs to all of us.

Sandy Monker, chair of the downtown business association, says: “We’ve already made progress in the downtown area in recent years. For example, visitors can now relax on new benches under the trees in the squares and alleys and discover other unique spots. The many seating areas and outdoor patios also invite people to meet up again in the downtown area soon. Thanks to the calmer street scene, you can better appreciate the wonderful shops and restaurants our downtown has to offer. On top of that, you’ll find a surprising and diverse selection in the downtown area, where hospitality is a top priority and visitors still receive truly personalized service.” In 2021, even more quality measures will be implemented, and if the pandemic allows, everyone will once again be able to enjoy an inviting city center.

A step further

“And together, we’re also looking ahead,” adds Councilor De Bruijn. “We see that increased digitization calls for new concepts, and the line between living, working, and leisure is becoming increasingly blurred. In addition, Voorschoten is on the cusp of a generational shift—from baby boomers to younger generations. This presents challenges, but also opportunities. And the municipality of Voorschoten wants to capitalize on those opportunities. This involves more housing in the town center for seniors, young people, and new groups with specific needs, as well as space for small hotels, (new) entrepreneurs who invest in quality and aesthetics, more space for healthcare, culture, education, new (innovative) work concepts, and a thriving hospitality sector as part of daily life. Together, we’re going to increase the daily use of the town center.” With this area vision, the municipality aims to ensure quality and create space for development, with the user at the center. Anyone who supports this vision is warmly welcome! The vision document “Stadsdorp in Beweging” can be found on the business page of this website.
