Blue-green algae found in Voorschoten

Blue-green algae has been found in the water at various locations in Voorschoten. Blue-green algae can cause serious health problems. Signs will be posted this week along the bodies of water where blue-green algae has been found; however, it can also develop in other locations very quickly.

Blue-green algae occur naturally in water and can produce toxic substances. This usually happens when there is a specific combination of temperature, light, and nutrients. Additionally, it occurs more quickly when there is little water current. They develop primarily in the summer at temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius.
