Anonymous drop-off point for illegal fireworks
Do you have illegal fireworks? Turn them in anonymously! With this appeal, the mayors of Voorschoten, Leiden, and Zoeterwoude are helping to ensure that illegal—and therefore dangerous—fireworks don’t end up on the streets.
Illegal fireworks are fireworks that you are not allowed to possess or set off. These include, for example, firecrackers, string fireworks such as Chinese mats, avalanche rockets, string fuses, and single-shot tubes. They also include heavy shells that may only be set off by professionals. Possessing or setting off illegal fireworks is a criminal offense.
Risks
“No one should want these dangerous fireworks to end up on the streets or be stored in homes, for example, given all the risks involved,” explains Mayor Nadine Stemerdink. “That’s why we’re offering residents the opportunity to turn them in anonymously. This offer is open to residents of Voorschoten, Leiden, and Zoeterwoude.”
Saturday, December 6, at Hofweg 47
Residents who wish to turn in illegal fireworks can do so on Saturday, December 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the municipal storage yard located at Hofweg 47, behind the Wittebrug car dealership in Voorschoten. A shipping container will be set up there that day, where a special police team will accept the illegal fireworks free of charge and anonymously. Items may be turned in in a box or a bag. A specialized company will destroy all fireworks turned in.
A Festive and Safe New Year's Eve
“When we suggested to the mayors of Leiden and Zoeterwoude that they join us, they both responded enthusiastically,” the mayor continues. “After all, the residents of our neighboring municipalities are also looking forward to a festive and safe New Year’s Eve. Illegal and dangerous fireworks have no place in that. But please note: you can turn in all your fireworks, except if they’re homemade. Because those are too dangerous even for the police.”
